Some discoveries are simply so cool that you do not want to share with anyone else.
As a paper enthusiasts, visiting NIPPON Creative Printing Show Volume I, was spectacular, inspiring, powerful, satisfying and leaving me wanting more…
There were 6 exhibits, featuring different types of unique printing techniques on carefully crafted paper. Just watching the video presentation, made me go, ooohhhhh and aahhhhhh as I learned how paper and printing is the only medium that triggers all 5 senses!!! The concept for this exhibit challenges many traditional printing business models, expanding the next stage for creative works by partnering traditional craft with technologies.

Nippon Creative Printing Show Volume I at ICFF 2009
The Japanese are known to cherish and to some extent, worship their artists. This show brings world renown artists to collaborate, creating works that aim to touch people’s hearts and create new markets. Out of the 6 exhibits, there were 3 that I absolutely love.

24.10.2008 UN WORLD DAY
So+Ba, a Swiss design company based in Japan, by designers Alex [so]nderegger and Susanna [ba]er, partnered with Kyoshin Printing Co. Ltd. to produce a documentary book for the United Nations World Day called, “24.10.2008 UN WORLD DAY”. The printing quality was absolutely stunning. The visual effects of the paper, blurring images of the graphics, coupled with amazing typography brought digital printing to the next level.

Shun Kawakami MA books
Shun Kawakami one of my favorite artist, partnered with ADPIA Inc. to produce this truly amazing book that used “ma” as their theme. “ma” which means space is an important element in kansei. See previous posting to find out more about the kansei concept. The book demonstrated traditional Japanese materials and techniques like rigid paper box and Japanese binding. Limited inks were used to enhance the “ma” effects of the beautiful illustration by Kawakami.

Clothing by printing - Masami Takahashi + Mizukami Insatsu
I’ve been obsessed with paper clothing since I first saw them at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. I’ve always wanted to make a book filled with paper clothing but never thought it was possible until I saw what Masami Takahashi and Mizukami Insatsu Co. Ltd. created.
The book contains 3 sets of T-shirts and pants that you can cut out from the pages and wear them. At first, I thought the material was Tyvek but was informed it was 100% paper!! The idea is to go on a trip without packing, but grabbing a book instead.
